Bethesda uses a series of unique techniques when it comes to its business philosophy. Pete Hines, vice president of public relations and marketing at Bethesda Softworks, talks about how Bethesda thinks when it comes to its business philosophy. Hines explained to Blaine Kyllo, a journalist writer on consumer technology and video games at straight, how Bethesda is super cautious when it comes to developing games. Because Bethesda is privately owned and not publicly owned like most other major-game companies they have a lot more flexibility when it comes to their releasing schedule. Bethesda Studios, Bethesda's game developer company, wont release a game unless it's ready and will take as much time as needed to perfect it.(Kyllo, 2014)
Similarly, Hines was extensively interviewed by Griffin McElroy about its business philosophy. Hines spewed out a lot of information in this article and it provides strong evidence that Bethesda really does care about it's followers and image. Hines comes to the conclusion that the gamers of modern day are the same as the gamers who are apart of Bethesda's crew when it comes to playing multiple genre's of games. Gamers of today who are playing western RPG's are also playing shooters, racing games, action games, etc. Because of this Bethesda is striving to be "the Pixar of gaming" by publishing a wider genre of games. (McElroy, 2014)
Bethesda may have started as a sports game developer, but since its origins it has gathered a small arsenal of different genre's of games, which includes; Western RPG's, Survival horror, action, and first person games. In doing so Bethesda is extending and branching out to more gamers who have favored genres in these areas.
Hines explains to McElroy how Bethesda is trying to be the pixar of gaming, and his explanation is really quite thought out. Hines says that Bethesda likes to stick with what they do best, which is single player RPG's but they want to satisfy a wider variety of people. He had some very inspiring words to say about the comparison of Pixar and how Bethesda wants to be viewed. Here is what he said "Wanting to be like the Pixar of video games is not a bad thing. You made finding nemo, and you made Wall-E, and those things are nothing alike. But at the same time, they're still forms of entertainment that share some commonalities in terms of level of execution, story, characters and the kinds of things they do. Yes, I love both of those things even though they're very different, and it doesn't feel weird hat a movie about a robot set on an abandoned Earth came from the same studio that made a movie about fish under the ocean. Its just how those things were executed and told that made them both Pixar things. You look at both of hem and say, "That's a Pixar movie."" The concept behind the idea is brilliant, and many people may not have even considered the vast variety ,when it comes to genre, that Pixar has gone to oppposite sides of the spectrum but still has managed to keep it's own personality in its movies. Hines wraps up saying this with, "I would like for people, long term, to think of Bethesda like that. When you play a Bethesda game, there's just something about it that makes you feel like that's a Bethesda game." (McElroy, 2014)
Hines says that Bethesda Game Studios succeeded because of the work ethic of Todd Howard. The Elder Scrolls series director and Fallout 3 creator he says, "really isn't interested in doing stuff publicly." preferring ot keep his nose to the grindstone rather than in the public eye. He doesn't allow himself to get distracted form the work he has, and attends very few events, and keeps a low status profile online. These are the kind of people that Bethesda, as a whole, gets along with and is why Bethesda cautions when choosing developers to bring in. So, in part, Hines explains that their personalities need to match or the work that needs to be done wont get done. (McElroy, 2014)
